Saul Ewing’s roots can be traced to John G. Johnson, the most prominent and influential Philadelphia lawyer of the late 19th century. Mr. Johnson believed in giving back to his community. In 1917, Mr. Johnson bequeathed to the citizens of Philadelphia his collection of more than 1,200 paintings, including many masterpieces from European artists. This collection was eventually integrated into the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s own holdings, allowing for a more unified presentation of European art between the 14th and the late 19th century.

Saul Ewing’s long tradition of giving back to the community through contributions to local civic, cultural, and business communities continues today. The Firm supports numerous volunteer and professional organizations through our donations of time, skill, and financial considerations of sponsored events. Many of our attorneys hold key positions in major organizations throughout the region, serving on boards and in other volunteer capacities.

Examples of active community-based service by Saul Ewing attorneys to charitable organizations include the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Red Cross, and the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Examples of our service to professional and business organizations include the Maryland Council on Economic Education, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Visitors Council of Philadelphia Board of Trustees. The Firm actively fosters cultural life through its support of many arts-related organizations, including the Baltimore, Harrisburg, Princeton, and Philadelphia Symphony Orchestras, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
