As the former Executive Vice President and General Counsel for QVC, Inc., Neal Grabell brings to Saul Ewing and its clients extensive knowledge of the international retail industry and hands-on experience with the broad range of legal work of a major American corporation. During his 21 years as General Counsel, Grabell was responsible for the $7 billion corporation's Legal Department. He was appointed Executive Vice President of QVC in 2004 and, in addition to the Legal Department, oversaw the corporation's Internal Audit, Facilities and Affiliate Sales and Marketing departments.
Grabell's experience with QVC began in June 1986 when, as outside counsel, he incorporated the company and worked on its initial public offering. QVC went public in September 1986. Grabell joined QVC as General Counsel in July 1987 and the company set a record in American business history for $112 million in sales in its first full fiscal year. In the next two decades, Grabell was instrumental in guiding QVC past many milestones, including the following:
- Acquiring the manufacturing facilities, proprietary technology and trade name rights from MSB Industries, Inc. for Diamonique® in 1988, resulting in $18 million in sales that year
- Launching the London, England-based QVC in 1993
- Launching QVC.com, the company’s internet shopping site in September 1996
- Opening the Germany-based QVC in December 1996
- Taking QVC private in 1996
- Launching QVC Japan, which premiered in April 2001
- Development, construction and expansion of six distribution centers and three call centers, beginning in 1987 and ending in July 2007 with opening of QVC’s 1.4 million square foot distribution center in Florence, South Carolina
Grabell's legal responsibilities have included overseeing complex corporate financing deals, real estate transactions, both domestic and abroad; labor and employment matters ranging from employment litigation enforcing restrictive covenants and non-competes to complying with evolving state and federal regulations; mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance issues and securities transactions. He also served on the Board of Directors of QVC's subsidiaries and remains a director of QVC's operating companies in the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan. He is client-focused, helping clients to identify problems and solve them. He also has extensive experience in dealing with investors, partners, suppliers, employees and government agencies. Grabell concentrates his practice on general corporate, corporate finance and commercial and international business matters.
Prior to joining QVC, Grabell was in private practice and served on the legislative staff of a U.S. Congressman while attending law school.
In addition to his legal career, Grabell has been actively involved in the Golden Slipper Club and Charities, a Philadelphia nonprofit dedicated to charity work for young people and senior citizens throughout Greater Philadelphia. The club runs a summer camp for children, offers emergency financial services to struggling individuals and families, maintains a college scholarship program and operates a senior citizens center. Grabell’s work with the Golden Slipper Club began as a camp counselor in 1974 and evolved into serving as President of the organization in 2004. He also is a Visiting Professor at Haverford College in Haverford, PA where he teaches an applied ethics course.
