News article quotes Wendell Holland in longstanding debate about privatizing Philadelphia Gas Works
PUC members renew pressure for city to sell PGW
Wendell F. Holland, a partner in the Energy and Utilities Practice and former chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, is quoted in this article about the decades-old debate surrounding ownership of Philadelphia Gas Works.
The article covers a meeting on January 24, 2012 between members of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and The Philadelphia Inquirer’s editorial board during which PUC members expressed frustration at the slow pace of a city study about privatizing Philadelphia Gas Works. Some PUC members said they want to renew pressure on the city to sell the utility, citing the high cost to replace the 1,500 miles of iron mains that will take the cash-strapped utility 85 years to replace at its current pace.
When he was PUC chairman, Holland argued that the city would be better served by selling the utility. "This is a classic case of a company that needs to be acquired in order to work out its financial and operational problems," Holland said in 2007.
