Overview

Laura Katz brings significant experience in the health care industry to Saul Ewing where she balances her practice between health law and health insurance law. As a member of the Firm's Health Care and Insurance Practices, Laura represents health care providers and suppliers, along with health insurers. She has also been appointed by U.S. Trustees as the Patient Care Ombudsman in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases in Maryland and in New Jersey.

Laura's health law practice focuses on helping clients keep pace with increasing changes in federal and state health care laws and regulations. Routinely, Laura assists health care clients with the preparation of documents, negotiations, strategic planning, risk management and compliance.

In particular, she helps physicians and other licensed health care practitioners along with health care entities, such as ambulatory surgery centers, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities in handling critical issues that are defining the way health care is delivered today.

Laura also represents health insurers, including managed care organizations, preferred provider organizations, and indemnity plans. She counsels clients on a wide range of regulatory and business issues affecting health insurers, including compliance, market conduct exams, network development, pharmacy benefit management, solvency issues, appeals and grievances processes, and mergers and acquisitions. She has extensive knowledge of Maryland laws and regulations affecting health insurers and has successfully represented clients before governmental authorities. Laura performed in the role as general counsel to a health insurer and third-party administrator.

Based on her experience and knowledge, Laura has been appointed as an arbitrator for the American Health Law Association in disputes between health insurers and providers. Her experience and knowledge has also been a valuable resource for clients. She works to keep clients informed of the latest developments in health care and insurance law by staying abreast of federal and state legislation.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Laura was a consultant to national hospital corporations engaged in obtaining Certificate of Needs and the evaluation of psychiatric treatment programs. Before that, she was employed as a psychiatric social worker for the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City Medical Service. Laura is regularly tapped to speak on cutting-edge issues affecting the health care industry and serves on various boards. She is a member of the American Health Law Association.
