Overview

Matthew Smith represents clients facing complex commercial litigation and has experience handling cases from the earliest stages of litigation through to jury trials, non-jury trials, and arbitration. He also has experience navigating lawsuits at the appellate level in Pennsylvania.

In his Higher Education practice, Matthew advises institutions of higher education in a wide range of matters including high-profile litigation, student conduct matters, internal investigations, Title IX, and other civil rights and discrimination matters.

As a member the firm's Cannabis Law Practice, he counsels businesses and employers to help them comply with medical and adult use cannabis laws and regulations. Matthew also counsels and represents state cannabis license applicants and awardees, investors and other entities that are affected by federal and state cannabis laws.

He also advises clients, including media and communications companies, on First Amendment and defamation matters.  
Matthew also handles a wide array of other general litigation matters.  He draws on his knowledge of risk management from defending dozens of insurance disputes involving both ERISA and non-ERISA governed insurance policies.  
Prior to joining Saul Ewing, Matthew was a judicial extern for the Honorable Kent A. Jordan in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Before earning his law degree, Matthew worked as an archaeological field director and technician for several cultural resource management firms. In those positions, he conducted excavations and supervised numerous archaeological projects and studies across the United States.
