Colorado added to the United States’ patchwork approach to data privacy regulation this week. On July 7, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed into law the Colorado Privacy Act (“CPA”), a sweeping law that creates substantial new obligations for organizations that process the personal data of Colorado residents. Recently approved Senate Bill No. 554 amends the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act, 65 Pa.C.S. §§ 701-716, to bring additional transparency to government decision-making. Currently, the Sunshine Act requires political subdivisions/agencies to deliberate and take official action on agency business in an open and public meeting. On July 1, 2021, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), along with several other federal agencies, issued an interim final rule to implement the first of several requirements in the No Surprises Act , which was enacted at the end of 2020. HHS was required to issue rulemaking implementing provisions of the No Surprises Act by July 1, 2021.
