The state of New York and New York City both recently moved to address issues involving sexual harassment in the workplace by passing a number of different laws that will increase awareness and expand protections for instances of sexual harassment at work. Below are the key takeaways from the new state and city laws that employers need to know.

New York State

The New York state laws are the result of anti-sexual harassment legislation included in the state’s 2019 budget, which was signed into law by Governor Cuomo earlier this month.

Following the allegations against former film producer Harvey Weinstein and the rise of the #MeToo movement, the legislative floodgates have opened as a number of states have proposed bills attempting to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace.

As sexual harassment becomes the subject of national conversation, some cities, such as Chicago, are making significant changes to laws in an effort to reduce harassment. A recent survey of hotels in the Chicagoland area revealed that more than half of women surveyed were sexually harassed or assaulted while at their job. As a result, on October 11, 2017, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance aimed at protecting hotel workers.
