Autonomous Vehicles, Ride-Sharing and Your University
By Louis Archambault and Kevin Levy
Industries Higher Education
The real estate industry is on the verge of major disruption due to futuristic technologies. These technologies are changing the way developers and cities plan for future development. The technologies will decrease the need for parking spaces, both in structures and lots, and present opportunities for educational leaders to rethink their campus plans to prepare for ACES vehicles. This article addresses some of that pending disruption for colleges planning for ACES and ride-...

Understanding “Lookback Windows” for Childhood Sexual Abuse Civil Claims
By Kathryn Beaumont Murphy
Industries Higher Education
Beginning December 1, 2019, New Jersey residents who are adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse will have two years to sue the alleged abuser or the institution where the alleged abuser worked. The state’s two-year “lookback window” is part of a law passed in May 2019 extending the state’s statute of limitations up to age 55 for civil claims related to childhood sexual abuse. Or, if the survivor is older than 55, the law extends the period to seven years after the survivor makes the discovery connecting emotional and psychological injury to the abuse. The lookback window is open through...

Timely Warnings: What, When, Why, and How
By Candace R. McLaren
Industries Higher Education
On April 30, 2019, two students were shot to death while attending class at UNC Charlotte. CNN reports that, in the year since the February 2018 massacre at Stoneman Douglas High School, there has been one shooting every 11.8 days . Notably, that number only accounts for K-12 schools; not for the hundreds of college and university campuses nationwide where it has become increasingly common for gunfire to erupt. As a result, school administrators must become adept at managing both the tragic and the unpredictable. Regardless of experience, thinking and acting strategically in the midst of a...
