In July 2019, Equifax's settlement deal over legal inquiries that resulted from its data breach was announced as $700 million. This Law360 article discussed how the news was perceived by the industry.

"Some are likely to point at the settlement as evidence that the system works, that regulators were able to extract a large penalty and require Equifax to put a rigorous system in place to decrease the chances of it happening again, and we don’t need a federal privacy law," said Sandy.
