IRS Budget Cuts Lead To Unanswered Calls At The IRS, Less Revenue
February 4, 2015

Bob McKenzie, a partner in Chicago law firm Arnstein & Lehr LLP, recently discussed the impact of Congress' budget cuts to the IRS on both well-meaning tax payers and tax fraud. His article, "National Taxpayer Advocate Reports Folly in Cutting IRS Budget," appeared in Forbes' IRS Watch blog earlier this month, and includes several startling statistics from IRS National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson's 2014 Annual Report to Congress:

  • 35.6 percent of phone calls went unanswered by customer service representatives
  • 50 percent of pieces of correspondence were not handled timely
  • Virtually zero tax returns were prepared by IRS walk-in sites
