Reiss Comments on Lawsuits Against Nonprofit Hospitals

"Barrage of Lawsuits 'Huge Wake-up Call' For Nonprofit Hospitals", USA Today

John B. Reiss, a Partner in the Business Department and Co-Chair of the Health Law Practice Group, is quoted in this article about a flurry of lawsuits filed against nonprofit hospitals. The lawsuits claim that nonprofit hospitals, which receive tax-exempt status, do not provide adequate charity care to uninsured consumers.

"The IRS has never been really clear about what the grant of tax-exempt status really means," Mr. Reiss said. "It's never been clear that it actually commits you to providing any amount of charity care or anything else."
