Katherine “Katie” Barrett Wiik brings more than 15 years of experience to her new role as a partner in Saul Ewing’s Litigation and Appellate practices, including serving as lead attorney in dozens of appeals and securing favorable outcomes for clients in cases before the Sixth, Eighth, and Ninth Circuits, the Minnesota Supreme Court, and the Minnesota Court of Appeals. She is resident in the firm’s Minneapolis office.

Companies across a wide array of industries, particularly in insurance and health care, rely on Ms. Barrett Wiik to represent them in state and federal appellate matters and complex employment and financial disputes. Her experience includes disputes involving breach of contracts as well as non-compete agreements and other employment issues. She also handles business torts and cases involving securities fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and other financial litigation.

Some of Ms. Barrett Wiik’s notable engagements include:

  • Successfully defending a jury verdict in two Ninth Circuit antitrust appeals for a major retail client, as well as the district court’s award of attorneys’ fees and costs.
  • Obtaining a reversal of summary judgment in a Sixth Circuit appeal, allowing the technology company client’s breach of contract and unjust enrichment claims to proceed against a major electronics manufacturer.
  • Briefing, arguing, and winning a motion regarding injunctive relief in a non-compete litigation matter for a major medical device company.

“We are thrilled to welcome Katie to Saul Ewing,” said Al Coleman, managing partner of the Firm’s Minneapolis office and an Executive Committee member. “Katie is an accomplished lawyer with an impressive depth of experiencing handling both trial and appellate cases. She is equally skilled at resolving matters for clients early in disputes through strategic motions, as well as monitoring cases in trial court to ensure issues are adequately preserved for potential appeals.”

Ms. Barrett Wiik earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School. She also has an L.L.M. in Human Rights Law and an M.A. in Comparative Ethnic Conflict, both from Queen’s University Belfast, where she was a British Marshall Scholar. She earned her B.A. from Malcalester College.
