(Washington, D.C. - 2019-02-19)

Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP today announced that Candace McLaren has joined the firm as a partner in the Higher Education and Litigation Practices. Ms. McLaren is resident in the Washington, D.C. office.

Ms. McLaren assists colleges and universities in matters involving Title IX compliance, the Clery Act, other state and federal laws and related issues. Drawing on a 20-year legal career that includes experience as an investigative and compliance manager in both government and at a university, she provides proactive consultation and guidance, risk management advice, and in-house training and instruction. When institutions of higher education face claims, Ms. McLaren also leads investigations, provides analysis of the risks, and, when necessary, defends these clients in government investigations and litigation.

Ms. McLaren's valuable compliance and investigative experience comes most recently from her former role as Director of the U.S. Department of Education's Clery Act Compliance Division. In this position as the nation's top Clery Act compliance officer, she directed and monitored the implementation of and adherence to related policies and procedures through a nationwide compliance program. Her legal career also includes positions as Director of the Office of Special Investigations for the New York City Department of Education, and as an Assistant District Attorney with the New York County District Attorney's Office. Ms. McLaren also brings an in-house perspective to her work, having served as the Assistant Vice President of Investigative Services for New York University's Public Safety Department.

"Colleges and universities face a deep level of scrutiny due to their obligation to comply with Title IX, the Clery Act and a whole host of  other federal and state laws and regulations," said Jason M. St. John, chair of the firm’s Litigation Practice. "We expect our clients in the higher education industry will benefit greatly from Candace's background, as well as her experience as a prosecutor, especially when it comes to investigations and litigation."

Ms. McLaren earned her J.D. from New York University Law School. She also has a B.A., summa cum laude, from Spelman College.
