Saul Ewing Opens Office in One Drexel Plaza to Serve Emerging Companies in Technology and Life Sciences

(Philadelphia, Pa. - 2015-12-01)

Saul Ewing LLP, a full service law firm with more than 270 lawyers in 11 East Coast offices, announced that it will occupy space at One Drexel Plaza, the eastern edge of real estate that Drexel University plans to develop as a neighborhood for research and technological innovation. The office is set to open in early December.

Innovation Neighborhood, a real estate corridor stretching west from 30th Street Station, between Market Street and JFK Boulevard, is envisioned in Drexel University’s master plan as an area that will be transformed into a sector for burgeoning science, technology and biomedical companies. It welcomed its first tenant at One Drexel Plaza, a new space at the Neighborhood’s eastern entrance. Local real estate development company PHL Next Stage Med is setting up shop there in a newly renovated, 20,800-square-foot space owned by the University at 3001 Market St.  Saul Ewing is leasing space from PHL Next Stage Med, which provides collaborative workspaces for specialty medical companies. It focuses on supporting companies that are bringing medical, therapeutic and diagnostic devices to the market or provide health-related information technology services. The group is currently working with three companies, who will each have a physical presence in PHL Next Stage Med’s corner of the Innovation Neighborhood.

Drexel’s Innovation Neighborhood, a 10.11-acre project, will create a new gateway to Drexel’s campus and University City. It will house technology partnerships, industrial joint ventures, interdisciplinary academic and research programs, business incubators and more. Offices and laboratories, classroom space and residential and retail property will develop in tandem to create a dense, mixed-use neighborhood.

Saul Ewing’s office in PHL Next Stage Med’s space will be staffed by a rotating roster of attorneys from its Life Sciences, Technology and Manufacturing,  Private Equity/Venture Capital, Real Estate and Higher Education practices.  They will hold office hours on a regular basis to provide existing and prospective clients with an opportunity to discuss their corporate, intellectual property, labor and employment, real estate and litigation needs. Saul Ewing’s attorneys also will provide opportunities to connect these entrepreneurs with the firm’s diverse network of contacts, including financial sources and strategic partners such as universities and mature companies in search of partnering opportunities. These companies will also have access to educational programming and other support services as part of the firm’s newest start-up initiative.

“We look forward to nurturing these growing companies and helping to position them for success.”  Senior Partner and former Firm Managing Partner, John F. Stoviak, added that “this office will further enable us to work closely, and collaborate, with an important client, Drexel University.”

Saul Ewing has focused on growing its Life Sciences and Technology and Private Equity practices in recent years, adding more than 20 lawyers and patent agents to its ranks since 2013. The firm represents a broad array of life sciences and technology clients, from large international pharmaceutical companies and research universities, to cutting edge technology and biotech companies, to exciting start-ups.
