New Life for Solid Waste

This article, written by Pamela S. Goodwin and Jane Kozinski, partner and special counsel, respectively, in the Environment and Natural Resources Practice Group, examines how trends in sustainability and alternative energy are driving reuse of solid waste.

Materials that were traditionally considered “solid waste” may instead be valuable commodities. Developers of alternative fuels are looking for low-carbon fuels, and some carbon-intensive manufacturers are looking at certain solid wastes as low-carbon alternatives to traditional raw materials. In addition, businesses are in search of mechanisms to meet corporate sustainability and waste minimization goals. Against this backdrop, materials once considered “waste” are finding new uses.
