James A. Keller, a partner and co-chair of the Higher Education Practice, wrote this article that identifies the first and most important steps a college or university can take to comply with the "Dear Colleague" Letter (DCL), issued April 4, 2011 by the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR). The DCL was the OCR’s first guidance regarding sexual harassment under Title IX.

The article covers the issues of identifying a Title IX coordinator and updating grievance procedures to comply with the DCL. A forthcoming NACUANote article will address the training obligations set forth in the DCL.
