Renewable Energy and Sustainability Applications for Colleges, Universities and Hospitals
Dan Skowronski

In recent years, colleges, universities and hospitals have been at the forefront in making public commitments to sustainability goals for energy consumed on their campuses. Building owners in these sectors have also found that renewable energy applications may reduce costs and increase reliability and certainty.

This article offers a basic introduction into various renewable energy and sustainability applications that your campus may be considering.

On-Site Applications*

* These applications may include permitting, installation and operation of renewable electric generation, as well as contracting on behalf of the building owner with third parties that finance and install renewable measures and enter into power purchase agreements or similar contracts with the building owner. Campuses should also be aware of associated state programs, such as net metering, renewable portfolio standards and renewable energy certificates (RECs).

Off-Site Applications (with third-party-owned utility-grade renewable facilities)
