Summer Associate Program

Summer Associate Program

Saul Ewing's Summer Associate Program focuses on giving students an accurate sense of what it's like to be a full-time associate at our firm. You will work on a variety of client projects, get to know our attorneys and staff, and experience the collaborative atmosphere that makes our firm an amazing place to work. Throughout the summer you will get both practical training and candid feedback. We also provide meaningful support and guidance through experienced Summer Associate Program leadership, mentors, and our Writing Advisor Program. All of these pieces add up to a program that consistently earns stellar reviews from the exceptional law students who experience the Saul Ewing Summer Program firsthand.

How to Apply

Saul Ewing looks for a select group of motivated second-year law students with excellent academic performance, diverse interests and an enthusiasm for the practice of law.

Our firm conducts annual on-campus interviews at law schools and job fairs within our geographic footprint. We then invite select candidates to visit our locations and meet with our lawyers. To obtain information about the interview procedures for your particular school, contact your school’s career services office.

If we are not scheduled to visit your campus, we encourage you to apply to our summer program directly.

Beginning May 2023, apply here.

Events

Saul Ewing's Summer Associate Program includes a wide array of community and social events.

In the past, summer associates have enjoyed cooking classes, museum tours, axe-throwing, escape rooms, and dinners hosted at restaurants and partners' homes. We also schedule meetings with a variety of public figures and judges, who are friends and alumni of the firm.

Other events include volunteer opportunities such as prepping meals for individuals living with illnesses and participating in a beach cleanup day.

All of these events provide opportunities for students to understand Saul Ewing’s attorneys and clients, firm culture, and of course, to relax and enjoy the summer!

Training

Saul Ewing's Summer Associate Program begins with all students from across the firm joining the entire Summer Associate Program leadership team for a multi-day orientation. The orientation is a great opportunity to meet your student colleagues, experience your first legal training sessions and meet many of the firm’s attorneys.

Real Work Experience

Throughout your summer, you'll draft memos, agreements and briefs that will actually be read by clients and judges. You'll attend client meetings, closings, court conferences, depositions and trials. You will also get a sense of the firm's commitment to pro bono work with the opportunity to handle a pro bono project. Real, meaningful work experience forms the foundation of the Saul Ewing Summer Associate Program.

Legal Skills Workshops

We will work hard to refine and sharpen your legal writing and drafting skills during the course of your summer. You'll get practical, hands-on guidance from talented legal writers in a workshop series format that covers essential skills for attorneys, including contract drafting and negotiation, legal and research memoranda, bluebooking, and marketing writing skills.

Evaluations and Feedback

Each of your assignments will be carefully evaluated by your assigning attorney, who will provide you with direct feedback. You will also be given both a mid-summer evaluation and an evaluation at the conclusion of the program that mirror our associate evaluation process. We'll candidly share with you what we see as your strengths and where we see room for improvement. Through these programs, you'll be kept informed as to your progress throughout your summer experience.

Writing Advisor Program

You will also receive private feedback from an assigned writing advisor, typically a partner at the firm, who will evaluate your written work product and provide his or her thoughts in an ongoing dialogue about your writing skills throughout the summer.
