Christopher "Smitty" Smith, Partner at Saul Ewing LLP, to Speak at the ABA Section EER on "For The Long Haul: Navigating Extended Producer Responsibility Laws"

Christopher "Smitty" Smith, Partner at Saul Ewing LLP, will serve as moderator and panelist at the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources on September 23, 2025.  The topic will be "For The Long Haul: Navigating Extended Producer Responsibility Laws."

This program will cover new developments in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Laws and provide practical guidance for how practitioners can advise their clients.

The rise of new of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws in the United States may present significant operational challenges for consumer-packaged goods companies. In 2024, Minnesota became the sixth state to enact a broad packaging EPR law, joining California, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, and Maryland in imposing responsibility for end-of-life management for single-use packaging on producers.

EPR laws intend to shift the cost of waste management to producers of single-use packaging. These laws aim to ease the financial burden on local governments while providing incentives to producers to improve product packaging to meet recycling standards and reduce landfill waste.
