Law and Policy | The IP Trifecta: How to Best Utilize Design Registrations, Copyrights, and Trade Dress to Protect Unique Products
Presented by the 2024–2025 Designs Committee
This session will explore how three different forms of intellectual property protection (design registrations, copyrights, and trade dress) can be utilized to protect a unique product shape. The panel will review the history of protecting designs through these three methods in the United States, the preferred timing for filing for each form of protection, example registrations, and case decisions. Our panel will also explore how these forms of protection may be utilized outside of the United States, specifically in Europe in both European Union and non-European Union countries.
