Patent Prosecution & Portfolio Development — Technology Areas

Dennis has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of U.S. and foreign patent applications spanning the life sciences, chemistry, and advanced-materials fields. Representative technology areas include:

  • Oncology therapeutics. Small molecules for the treatment and prevention of cancer and the inhibition of tumor metastasis, including androgen-receptor inhibitors, RAD52 recombination-protein inhibitors, and sigma-1 and pyrvinium-based anti-cancer agents.
  • Targeted protein degradation (PROTACs and molecular degraders). Proteolysis-targeting chimeras, hydrophobic-tagging degraders, imide-based modulators of proteolysis, BTK degraders, and bifunctional molecules that degrade circulating and extracellular proteins, including engineered antibodies used as degraders.
  • Immunology and inflammation. Inhibitors and modulators of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), CX3CR1 and CXCR5 antagonists, IL-1R-mediated disease therapeutics, and treatments for arthritis and airway disease.
  • Neuroscience and psychiatry. Combination therapies for depression and mood disorders, psychedelic and DMT-based treatments, therapeutics for PTSD, restless legs syndrome, neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disease, and glutamate-transporter modulators.
  • Gastrointestinal therapeutics. An extensive family of guanylate cyclase C agonists and related formulations for gastrointestinal disorders and ulcerative colitis.
  • Metabolic and endocrine disorders. 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) derivatives and formulations, therapeutics for liver disease, ACSS2 inhibitors, selective JAK2 ligands, and melanocortin/GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Antivirals, anti-infectives, and pest control. Cyclic-peptide antiviral agents, viral-entry inhibitors, non-covalent inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease, and mammal-safe insecticides and pest-control compounds.
  • Dermatology. Compositions and methods for treating dermal disorders and vitiligo.
  • Molecular imaging, diagnostics, and theranostics. Transition-metal MRI contrast agents, PET imaging agents, paramagnetic NMR-based biosensors, chemiluminescent and fluorescent imaging nanoparticles, and pO2/pH-sensitive theranostic liposome nanocarriers.
  • Drug delivery and formulations. Tetracycline delivery systems, in-situ-forming biodegradable ocular nanocarriers, injectable thermoresponsive hydrogels, and bio-ionic-liquid hydrogels.
  • Polymers and advanced materials. Network polymers, high-dynamic-range and holographic photopolymers, ionic-liquid and mixed-matrix membranes, self-healing composites, carbon fibers, and tunable metamaterials for impact absorption.
  • Photochemistry, photocatalysis, and additive manufacturing. Organic photocatalysis, light-induced carbon–sulfur cross-coupling, 3D printing of composition-controlled copolymers, additive manufacturing of tough gels and elastomers, and AI-assisted computational fragment-based drug design.
  • Dental materials and biomaterials. Dentin-bonding chemistries, self-healing dental composites, 3D-printed hydroxyapatite scaffolds for bone regeneration, and dual-phase calcium-phosphate cements.
  • Energy, environmental, and green chemistry. Carbon-dioxide capture and storage, sulfur–carbon battery materials, control of microbially induced concrete corrosion, macronutrient sequestration from wastewater, and high-recycled-content asphalt.
  • Hematology and rare disease. Compounds and methods for treating sickle cell disease, low-platelet-count disorders, and Kawasaki disease.

Patent Litigation

Dennis has acted as co-counsel in litigations asserting patent rights and has prepared for trial including by evaluating opposing-party infringement and invalidity positions, and by assisting with the financial analysis underlying damages calculations.

Select matters include:

  • Serving on the trial team representing a German biotechnology company, the patent owner, in a high-stakes infringement action against Amgen Inc., asserting patents directed to methods of reducing the non-specific release of cytokines by co-administering glucocorticoids with bispecific, immunostimulating antibodies – technology implicated by Amgen’s blockbuster cancer immunotherapy BLINCYTO. Contributed to the matter from its earliest stages through a two-week jury trial that resulted in a verdict of infringement and no invalidity on the asserted patents, a post-trial ruling from the district court that the asserted patents are unenforceable for inequitable conduct, and the pending Federal Circuit appeal.
